Headcount needed for Nov 5 and 6

Please let Gary-sensei or Carlo know via phone call or text if you will be able to attend either or both classes this weekend. Gary-sensei will decide by Wednesday night if there will be a class. A few of the regulars are going up to Seattle to compete in the Continental Crown Judo Tournament, so we are anticipating a low turnout that may require us to resume class the following weekend. Blinky-sensei will be running classes on both days if there are enough participants to make it worth his while to drive up. He is definitely worth your time. Thank you.

Two types of pain in life for you to choose from: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The choice is yours every weekend.

Instructors for October 29 & 30

Gary Butts will be teaching on Saturday, October 29, including no-gi and grappling.

AnnMaria De Mars & Richard Elizalde will be teaching on Sunday from 3 pm to 6 pm.

They will be teaching judo that you can use in grappling if you want to.

Drill day was fun but this time we will be doing a lot of transition, throwing into pins, and some grip-fighting just because we haven't done much of that lately, as well as foot techniques.

Drill Day!

This Saturday has been proclaimed "Drill Day".
Come prepared to do - drills, duh! Here are a few of the many, many we will be doing:

MATWORK DRILLS
Helicopter Drill : someone on the Judo Forum named it that, but we used to do it at Venice Dojo long ago. Put your weight on your opponent's back, spin fast in one direction. When the sensei yells "Switch!" spin fast in the other direction. When the sensei says "Hajime!" both of you attack.

Escape drill 1:
You all know this - one person is on his or her back and the other gets as close as possible without touching. On "Hajime!" the one on the bottom has 10 seconds to escape without getting pinned.

Escape drill 2: You're pinned. You have 25 seconds to escape. That is all.

Escape drill 3: You're pinned. Every time the coach yells "Switch!" the person on top has to switch to another pin. Try to get out. Don't wait until the coach says to switch. Try to get out from the very beginning. What is wrong with you?

Escape drill 4: You're on your back and the opponent has your arm. You have ten seconds to get away and he or she has ten seconds to try to armbar you.

Wrestler's roll: You are on all fours. Your partner as next to you. When the coach yells "Reach!" the partner reaches a hand over your back and you need to IMMEDIATELY, roll that person into a pin. [Bet you thought I was going to say Escape drill 5, didn't you?]

More drills to come ... watch this site..

Hayward Nishioka confirms as seventh instructor at West Coast Judo Grand Opening

Hayward Nishioka, the only person in the U.S. to have been a competitor, coach and referee at the world judo championships (in different years, he's not that awesome) and author of several books on judo.

You can see him in his younger days throwing Rickson Gracie in this video.

Mystery Dates revealed ... more instructors at October 1 Grand Opening

Just a note that Tom Reusling of Gracie Barra Corona will also be on hand at the Grand Opening. Tom runs one of the most family-friendly clubs around and is a really nice guy on top of it. Whether you'd like to see a few jiu-jitsu moves or get a couple of pointers on the challenges and rewards of running a commercial dojo, ask Tom, he'll be happy to share his experience with you.

Apologies to Tom who had sent his confirmation earlier but we'd missed it. (Okay, *cough* *cough* AnnMaria missed it.)

There are a few other instructors who said they would try to make it. As Yoda said, There is no try. Just do.

Will add more info as it becomes available. Or just show up and be surprised.

Very important update and grappling clinic

Hello all, there will be no practice on the next two weekends(9/10-11, @ NAGA Las Vegas; 9/17-18, move to new location). We are proud to announce that we will be holding practice on September 24/25 at the new location for West Coast Judo Training Center at 859 W Foothill Blvd, Claremont CA 91711(Sekai Black Belt Academy). Please tell everybody about the location. One of the parents noticed that the location is air conditioned, has much more seating and at least double the mat space(don't let the small entrance way fool you). It is also in a family-friendly location, so parents and spouses have multiple options in passing the time as their loved ones prepare for the next tournament. This will all be followed by the official grand opening on Saturday, October 1st with a grappling clinic to be conducted by Ronda Rousey(undefeated professional MMA fighter, devastating armbar machine, 2-time Olympian and 2008 Olympic Judo Bronze medalist), Dr. AnnMaria De Mars(1st American to win a Judo World Championship and more importantly mother of Ronda and her three sisters), Manny Gamburyan(extremely dangerous MMA fighter, nationally and internationally ranked Judo and Sambo competitor) and other special guests to be announced. Start Your New Year's Resolution with Practice January 2nd

Everyone has been asking if there will be practice on Sunday.
Yes.
Instructors confirmed so far: AnnMaria De Mars & Gary Butts.
As far as I know, Richard (Blinky) Elizalde will also be there.

If you've made a New Year's resolution to be getting to the training center or just to be getting in more hours of practice, well, show your over-fed, holiday 10 pounds self up at 3 p.m.

It was nice to see all of you in San Diego this week, by the way. We didn't get a chance to do as much randori as I would like to have seen, so maybe we can get a few extra rounds in on Sunday.

Ronda won't be here because she is supposed to be resting and cutting weight before her fight in Las Vegas on January 7. She works at 24 Hour Fitness on the graveyard shift on weekends and since everyone shows up right after making their New Year's resolution to get in shape, she is going to be putting in the hours this weekend.
